THE PREDICTION

Team World began their Laver Cup title defence perfectly on Day 1 with a 4-0 clean sweep, in straight sets in each of the singles and 10-6 in the deciding doubles tiebreak. World number six Andrey Rublev looked eager to try and save some face in that doubles clash yesterday and he will come out fighting on Saturday in this potential thriller with world number eight Taylor Fritz, whose recent form suggests Team Europe can get on the board. 25-year-old Fritz sat out of the Davis Cup group stages last week after a disappointing end to his US Open campaign, another one-sided defeat to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, and the break should help him improve after recent avoidable losses to the likes of Alex de Minaur and Tallon Griekspoor. Rublev also made the US Open finals through a tougher draw, before defeat to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, but eh beat Fritz in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters back in April en-route to his most prestigious title yet.

The Russian has been better on clay than elsewhere this season but Fritz has been the more vulnerable in recent weeks. Take Rublev to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors or risk the three set option.
