30-year-old Ana Bogdan set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th back in July but she has struggled with injuries since to fall back to 73rd. The Romanian will be a popular draw for Cluj-Napoca crowds this week and she brings some strong form after winning the Parma Challenger this time last month on her favoured clay. A straight-sets victory over Viktoriya Tomova looked assured on Tuesday but she will have to stay focused against 17-year-old Nikola Bartunkova, who beat Dayana Yastremska in straight sets on her WTA tour debut on Monday. The Czech finished runner-up to Clervie Ngounoue in the Girls’ Singles at Wimbledon back in July and she brings strong form into the Transylvania Open after winning an ITF event in Italy earlier this month. Bogdan will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere but taking the 30-year-old to win outright is a sensible concession.
