THE PREDICTION
This is a really tricky call between former world number one Karolina Pliskova, who is suddenly through to her first WTA tour final since the Canada Masters in 2021, and home underdog Ana Bogdan aiming to claim her maiden title at 31 years old. Pliskova, also 31, has enjoyed an illustrious career with a current total of 16 WTA titles but she has, notably, lost each of her last four finals on tour stretching back to success at the 2020 Brisbane International. The Czech is currently ranked 78th after a poor 12 months on tour but she has yet to drop a set this week to look the resolute favourite to snap her dry spell here. World number 65 Bogdan will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere in Cluj-Napoca but the Romanian trails their tour-level head-to-head 2-0 to look a little underpowered – particularly on Pliskova’s favoured conditions. Bogdan would stand a better chance on her favoured clay but back Pliskova to have too much power for her opponent here to finally lift a 17th title.
