23-year-old Alycia Parks set a career-high WTA world ranking of 40th last summer after winning her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open. The American fell back as far as world number 82 this week after a poor second-half to 2023 but a stunning upset over Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday saw 13 aces in straight sets, displaying all of her key weapons for conditions like Melbourne’s. This looks a step too far, though, against world number four Coco Gauff as the US Open champion has come through her first two matches without finding anything like her best tennis.
19-year-old Gauff has also worked on her serve over the off-season to add further strings to her bow, with last summer’s remarkable surge in confidence seeing her realise her potential over the space of just a few months. Parks’ serve is the more potent of the two but perhaps the less dependable, suggesting a tiebreak is likely in this match but straight sets remain the reasonable pick.
