THE PREDICTION

World number 55 Facundo Diaz Acosta enjoyed a transformative South American clay swing in February, winning his maiden ATP title on home clay at the Argentina Open, but he first shone in a five-set thriller at the Australian Open in January that suggests he could surprise a few people here. The 23-year-old’s three-set exit to Pedro Martinez last time out at the Chile Open sees him come in a little cold one month on but world number 45 Alexei Popyrin is in a similar boat after missing his last two tournaments through injury, with a run to the semi-finals of the Qatar Open his last outing. The Aussie is the clear favourite on paper in hot hardcourt conditions that should suit him to a tee but it is difficult to back either player with confidence given their recent absences.
