THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Alexander Zverev is the top seed here in Chengdu as he comes in from an impressive run to the quarter-finals at the US Open two weeks ago. The 26-year-old beat Grigor Dimitrov in impressive fashion to make the round of 16 before a five-set thriller over Jannik Sinner sent him rather fatigued into a straight-sets defeat to Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev made the semi-finals at the Cincinnati Masters before New York to look like trending in the right direction but it remains to be seen how well he starts away from the spotlight at ATP 250 level. World number 106 Pavel Kotov qualified without a hitch before an assured straight-sets victory over Daniel Elahi Galan on Thursday but this should be far too steep a challenge. The Russian stands a chance at a set if Zverev takes a little time getting going but Zverev should be coming through in two.
