THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating and likely thrilling clash between world number two Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion here at Indian Wells, and world number six Alexander Zverev, who has won each of their last two encounters to take a 7-3 lead in their head-to-head. 20-year-old Alcaraz has struggled to find his best tennis practically ever since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Cincinnati Masters last August, having stunned the Serb in the Wimbledon final a month before, to explain away his last two meetings with Zverev but there is little doubt that the German has a blueprint for success in their matches unless he happens across a peak version of the Spaniard. Alcaraz looks to have turned a corner over the past few rounds, initially coming back from a set down to beat Matteo Arnaldi before more assured victories over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Fabian Marozsan – both of whom notably held positive records over him – but Zverev came back from a set down to oust in-form Alex de Minaur on Tuesday to look well up to the challenge.
Since Alcaraz became the world-beater he can be today, roughly mid-2022, the pair share a much more representative 3-3 record that suggests this will come close. Furthermore, three of their last six encounters have seen sets go both ways, with Zverev 2-1 on hardcourts but Alcaraz winning their only clash on US soil (at the US Open last summer) and both of their meetings around this portion of the season (two victories in Madrid, including the final in 2022). The Spaniard should enjoy the majority, if not all, of the support on Thursday and he will be desperate to live up to it after spending months looking like a shadow of himself. Back the defending champion to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions, let alone semi-finalists, or risk an outright call on him to squeak through.
