ALEXANDER ZVEREV
World number six Alexander Zverev beat qualifier Alex Michelsen in straight sets on Saturday to improve on some very choppy results over Dominik Koepfer and Lukas Klein. The 26-year-old won four of his five singles matches at the United Cup, beating the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz whilst losing to Alex de Minaur, to lead Germany to the title two weeks ago but he has so far struggled to emulate that form in Melbourne. Zverev finished runner-up to Dominic Thiem at the US Open in 2020, losing to the Austrian from two sets up, with his best run here a semi-final exit earlier that year.
CAMERON NORRIE
World number 22 Cam Norrie put in his best performance in months to stun 11th seed Casper Ruud in four sets on Saturday, beating the former number two for the first time. The 28-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth in 2022 but he could have risen even higher had his career-best run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon that summer not been denied ranking points by the ATP’s controversial response to the Russian/Belarussian ban at SW19. Norrie also made the round of 16 at the US Open in 2022, with this his first second week in Melbourne.
THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Cam Norrie should receive plenty of the neutral support here in Melbourne as the underdog with a New Zealand connection, having grown up in Auckland before moving to the UK. News of Alexander Zverev’s off-court issues rumble on, likely adding to the support for Norrie here, but the German has so far been able to cope under the increased scrutiny on-court. Zverev looks the solid favourite to reach the quarter-finals with a 4-0 lead over Norrie in their head-to-head, with the Brit yet to take a set, but Norrie beat Casper Ruud for the first time on Saturday to suggest this could be their closest battle yet. Back Zverev to win outright all the same but consider adding at least a tiebreak here, with three of their four previous matches seeing one.
