THE PREDICTION

World number 70 Aleksandar Vukic spoiled the party on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over Diego Schwartzman in the Argentine former finalist’s last appearance in Rome. The 28-year-old snapped a four-match losing streak in doing so but clay remains his least effective surface, with last summer’s second place at the Atlanta Open, on his favoured hardcourts, hall-marking the start of some excellent improvements on tour.

World number five Alexander Zverev beat Vukic in straight sets in the first round of the US Open last summer to snap the Aussie’s purple patch and he should be able to come through just as comfortably in this second encounter as he returns to the scene of one of his earliest successes. A teenage Zverev stunned Novak Djokovic to win the Italian Open title in Rome, his first of now five Masters crowns, and it took eventual champion Daniil Medvedev to oust him last season. Back Zverev to bounce back from a surprise loss to Francisco Cerundolo last week in straight sets here.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN 2-0
