THE PREDICTION

World number 40 Sebastian Baez beat Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets on Wednesday to get his Italian Open campaign underway but he will have to recalibrate quickly here as Alexander Shevchenko comes in late to replace his initial second round opponent, Tallon Griekspoor. 22-year-old Shevchenko produced a stunning run to the third round of the Madrid Open and took a set from his friend and compatriot Daniil Medvedev before defeat there. The Russian set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 93rd for his trouble and it will be interesting to see how he fares this week as a lucky loser after defeat to Arthur Fils in qualifying, particularly as lucky losers tore the Madrid Open draw apart last week. Baez is a top clay-courter well capable of winning this first encounter with Shevchenko in straight sets but the suitably cautious pick is taking the Argentine to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
