Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open after a straight sets win over Christopher O’Connell. The 2024 US Open finalist was not broken on serve and conceded just the one break point as he won 6-4 6-3. Fritz picked up the Washington Open title earlier this month.
He will face Brandon Nakashima next. Nakashima continued his fine form as he defeated Nuno Borges in three sets to progress to his third successive quarter-final. The American fired down 27 aces as he completed a 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-3 victory.
Fritz leads the head-to-head 4-1 and 2-1 on outdoor hard court. They faced each other just a few weeks ago at the semi-final stage in Washington, with the 28-year-old prevailing in three sets. Nakashima should not be underestimated, especially given his level during the North American hard court swing. Fritz is the favourite, but this could be decided by a third set.
