22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 60th after overcoming lucky loser Mate Valkusz in three sets on Wednesday, backing-up an opener over Mathias Bourgue. The Russian has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season with deep runs across surfaces at both the Madrid Masters and Swiss Indoors suggesting he has an even bigger year ahead of him in 2024 but this looks too steep of a challenge against his compatriot. World number 15 Karen Khachanov finally won his fifth ATP title at the Zhuhai Championships in September to take the heat off of his previous trophy lifted five years ago at the Paris Masters and he looks the favourite to add a sixth here in Metz. The 27-year-old beat Constant Lestienne with little fuss on Wednesday but this first encounter with Shevchenko should be a lot tougher. Back the elder Russian to win outright.
