THE PREDICTION

There will be a lot of hype around 17-year-old wildcard Joao Fonseca’s debut here in Madrid and it is well-earned after a fabulous start to his first season on tour. The Brazilian set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 242nd this week after reaching the quarter-finals of the Bucharest Open, upsetting Lorenzo Sonego en-route, to match his huge last eight finish on home clay at the Rio Open in February. A run to the quarter-finals at the Madrid Challenger earlier this month bodes well for Fonseca’s chances at a decent spell this fortnight, with practice in Madrid’s high altitude vitally important, but 19-year-old Alex Michelsen also brings a career-high of 70th into his Madrid debut to make for a really entertaining first encounter between up-and-comers.

The American similarly burst onto the scene at home last summer when he reached the Newport Open final in only his second ever tournament and he has clearly put the work in on clay this month, bringing a 1-3 record into Madrid after playing three tournaments. Back Fonseca to earn at least a set as the more comfortable in these conditions to leave a likely three-setter up to chance.

TIP: JOAO FONSECA TO WIN A SET
