ALEX DE MINAUR
24-year-old Alex de Minaur set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 10th after leading Australia to the semi-finals of the United Cup, where he stunned Novak Djokovic in straight sets to avenge his defeat top the Serb at this stage of the Australian Open last season. The Aussie number one has coasted through his last two rounds with searing victories over Italian youngsters, Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli, but he has yet to make the quarter-finals at his home Grand Slam -doing so just once elsewhere at the US Open in 2020.
ANDREY RUBLEV
World number five Andrey Rublev survived an early scare in five sets against Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round of the Australian Open but he has not looked back since, beating two tough foes in Christopher Eubanks and Sebastian Korda in straight sets apiece. The 26-year-old rides a seven-match winning streak into the round of 16 after claiming the 18th ATP title of his career at the Hong Kong Open two weeks ago. Rublev has reached nine Grand Slam quarter-finals, completing the set with a run to the last eight at Wimbledon last summer, but he has so far failed to progress beyond that.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling and likely back-and-forth encounter between home favourite Alex de Minaur and fifth seed Andrey Rublev, both of whom have blasted through their last two rounds to bring enough energy for a battle. 24-year-old De Minaur will have the partisan backing of Rod Laver Arena in his corner but Rublev beat the Aussie from a set down in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters late last season to look the slightest of favourites on form. However, De Minaur leads their head-to-head record 3-2 and he has earned at least a set in all five of those meetings to offer a suitable alternative to picking a winner here. Back De Minaur to win at least two sets to leave the result up to chance, or at least up to the Melbourne crowd’s whim.
