22-year-old Clara Burel brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 51st into the Australian Open after a decent run to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International last week. The Frenchwoman has twice finished runner-up at the Lausanne Ladies Open on her favoured clay, in 2021 and last summer, but she has enjoyed occasionally strong spells on hardcourts too to look the reasonable favourite from this first encounter with Aleksandra Krunic. 30-year-old Krunic set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th in 2018, and she reached the round of 16 at the US Open four years before that, but the Serb has is through to the main draw here in Melbourne on a protected ranking after missing most of last season through injury.
