THE PREDICTION
World number 65 Aleksandar Vukic fired the warning shot across Novak Djokovic’s bow at Indian Wells two weeks ago, taking a set from the out-of-sorts Serb in defeat before Luca Nardi ousted him in the next round. 27-year-old Vukic reached his maiden tour final at the Atlanta Open before a gut-wrenchingly tight defeat in three to Taylor Fritz but he has vastly improved his performances at this level since the start of last season to earn his automatic place here in Miami.
World number 64 Roberto Carballes Baena is one of several players here this fortnight who may be a little distracted by the anticipation of a return to their favoured clay from April. The 30-year-old won his second ATP title at the Marrakech Open on the faster surface almost a year ago and he retired from a Challenger last week in Phoenix to suggest he will not take any chances ahead of its defence. Vukic won their first encounter in straight sets at the Shanghai Masters last October and he can be backed to do again here – although outright is wise for an accumulator.
TIP: ALEKSANDAR VUKIC TO WIN 2-0
