THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling clash of styles between two left-handers in powerful American Ben Shelton and France’s disruptive number one Adrian Mannarino. 35-year-old Mannarino brought a career-high ATP world ranking of 19th into the Australian Open and he is in a flat-out race with Ugo Humbert to remain French number one this fortnight. Back-to-back five set victories over former champion Stan Wawrinka and Jaume Munar so far in Melbourne could see the veteran struggle against young rising star Ben Shelton but he beat the American in three sets at the Miami Open last March to lead their head-to-head and he has enjoyed the best form of his career over the last six or so months – winning three ATP titles.

World number 16 Shelton dropped a set against Christopher O’Connell on Wednesday but he has looked in serious shape so far as he aims to emulate his dream debut run to the quarter-finals here last season. The 21-year-old will be desperate for a rematch with Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 but he is well capable of taking his eye off of the ball in this clash with perennial underdog Mannarino. Back Shelton to edge this outright, with both players likely to take sets.

TIP: BEN SHELTON TO WIN
