34-year-old Andy Murray took the first set against eighth seed David Goffin on Thursday before the Belgian retired from the match, meaning the Brit is through to his first ATP tour semi-final since 2019. Murray will have been supremely glad of the short match against Goffin after a three-hour plus tussle with Nikoloz Basilashvili on Wednesday in which he cam back from a set down to win. He will face Basilashvili once again in the first round of the Australian Open next week but a first meeting with fourth seed Reilly Opelka is first on the agenda. World number 25 Opelka is yet to drop a set in Sydney with two strong wins over Jordan Thompson and Brandon Nakashima but this will be a fascinating match-up between one of the biggest servers on tour against one of the sports’ best ever defenders. Tiebreaks are very likely here and it could be worth opting for at least one in the match instead of a result which could go either way.
