THE PREDICTION
World number 31 Veronika Kudermetova was handed a huge walkover after Naomi Osaka was forced to pull out ahead of their semi-final for an injury precaution. The 24-year-old Russian claimed her first WTA title last season at the WTA 500 level Charleston Open on clay but she also reached the Abu Dhabi final on a hard court before defeat to Aryna Sabalenka. Current world number 20 Simona Halep has been fairly comfortable in reaching the final this campaign, with a three-set victory over Viktorija Golubic her most difficult result. The 30-year-old is targeting a route back to the top 10 and she will start next week in at least 15th place in the WTA world rankings.
There is fairly convincing evidence for Simona Halep winning her first title since 2020 here as she leads Veronika Kudermetova 2-0 in their head-to-head record with two straight-set victories on hardcourts last season at the Australian Open and more recently at the Kremlin Cup.
