World number six Rafael Nadal is yet to drop a set in Melbourne after a tough test against Emil Ruusuvuori on Saturday eventually fell his way. The 35-year-old will be pleased with his week’s efforts on his return from a long injury lay-off and a first title since last May’s Italian Open would be the cherry on top of the cake. However, this looks a difficult call considering the Spaniard is still building back up his level with world number 112 Maxime Cressy playing the best tennis of his young career this week. The 24-year-old beat Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets on Saturday to back-up a huge three-set comeback win over his compatriot Reilly Opelka earlier this week and he will set a new career-high of at least 75th no matter the outcome here.
In what is certainly the biggest match of his career against 20-time Grand Slam champion Nadal the American will likely never have a better chance at beating a former world number one. Taking Cressy to win at least a set here is the shrewd pick but given his campaign so far the cautious pick remains Rafael Nadal to navigate a route to victory.
