Every match is crucial in this nail-biter of an ATP Cup final but if world number 14 Denis Shapovalov can build on his steadily improving performances this week to beat world number 20 Pablo Carreno Busta the tie will lean very heavily in Canada’s favour. With Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime proving to be a potent doubles team after back-to-back deciding wins over Great Britain and Russia, 22-year-old Shapovalov will aim to take a heap of pressure off Auger-Aliassime by beating Carreno Busta for only the second time in his career. 30-year-old PCB has had the best of Shapovalov in a 4-1 head-to-head record, though, with wins in each of their last three meetings including over five sets in the quarter-finals of the 2020 US Open. Carreno Busta is yet to drop a set this week as a far-superior second option to the rest of the nations Spain have faced but this will be a huge step-up in intensity.
The Spaniard is excellent under pressure and solid on a hard court, with much of this match to be decided by how well Shapovalov can serve. A tiebreak could be a useful addition here or a decent alternative to the result but taking the steadier Spaniard to win at least a set here looks the most reasonable outcome.
