World number one Ashleigh Barty has faced some seriously tough players this week at the Adelaide International and her already imperious game has markedly improved from a three-set win over Cocoa Gauff through to straight-set wins over Sofia Kenin and Iga Swiatek. There is no one on the WTA tour at this moment in time that can hold a consistent candle to the 25-year-old’s talent and most importantly her focus, with a service game that gives barely anything away. World number 14 Elena Rybakina has impressed this campaign and she will set a new career-high world ranking of at least 12th no matter the outcome here. The 22-year-old has the game to reach a fair few more hardcourt finals this season and she will be a serious threat at the Australian Open later this month.
Barty was the winner of their only previous encounter with a straight sets victory in the third round of the Australian Open back in 2020 and she looks the solid favourite on home soil here in Adelaide once again. The world number one’s defeat of Iga Swiatek is a level above Elena Rybakina at this moment in time but the Kazakh is making steady progress all the time as a very near-future top 10 player. Barty can start 2022 off with a title via an outright win here.
