THE LOWDOWN

JIRI VESELY

Jiri Vesely has not been anywhere near his best in 2021 but he will hope that his previous performances at Wimbledon will benefit him as he faces Yannick Hanfmann in round one. The Czech has progressed out of the first round in his last six appearances since 2014 and has had a couple of fourth round appearances during that time. He is happy on the grass at SW19 and will hope to get through the first week this time around.

YANNICK HANFMANN

29-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann makes his debut in the main draw at Wimbledon and he will be fired up to do well here. He can take confidence from a win over Vesely in Monte Carlo earlier this year but this will be a different proposition on grass. He has previously lost out in the qualifying rounds on three occasions so he will be relishing this opportunity.

THE PREDICTION

It is difficult to have much confidence in Jiri Vesely based on how he has been playing this year but he has a good track record at Wimbledon and that cannot be ignored. He is well-suited to the conditions in SW19 and he will be confident of overcoming Yannick Hanfmann here. The German will feel he has nothing to lose on his main draw debut but this is a tough assignment for him. Vesely is heavily favoured to get the win and move into round two.
