World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz is chasing a well-deserved ATP Finals debut later this month but he is in direct competition for the last two remaining spots with Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cam Norrie in an exciting sub-plot this week in Paris. 24-year-old Hurkacz can qualify if the likes of Sinner and Ruud bomb out early and he betters the results of Auger-Aliassime and Norrie behind him, although he has been caught out on tour a few times since doing the singles and men’s doubles double at the Moselle Open back in September. The Pole won his first Masters event earlier this year at the Miami Open but he did win the doubles here last season alongside Auger-Aliassime. World number 53 Tommy Paul got his Paris Masters campaign underway with a solid victory over Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday in straight sets. The 24-year-old came back into form at Indian Wells last month with a season’s best win over Andrey Rublev.
Tommy Paul has endured a distinctly average couple of seasons on tour since breaking through in 2019 but the American is really enjoying his tennis on these slower hardcourts in California and Paris. He has a chance against world number 10 Hubert Hurkacz here with the Poel sometimes slow to start tournaments, as his loss to Andy Murray last week in Vienna suggests. Still, the Pole has ATP Finals motivation to drag him through the tougher moments and it is hard not to see him reach the round of 16.
