THE PREDICTION
Paris Masters’ 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta looked solid in a straight-sets victory over Benoit Paire in the late match on Monday. The 30-year-old added two more ATP titles this season to his total of six with wins on clay at the Andalucia Open and Hamburg Open but he is also an excellent hardcourt player with a Bronze Medal from the Tokyo Olympic Games, via victory over Novak Djokovic, to show for it. One of the performances of the day came from 21-year-old Hugo Gaston, though, who came from a set down to beat fellow Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. The diminutive lefty has taken out three good players already including qualifying rounds and he will break the top 100 for a first time no matter the outcome of this match.
Hugo Gaston has a way of endearing a Parisian crowd to his cause, with last season’s run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros springing to mind, and he will have no trouble creating a partisan atmosphere here against Pablo Carreno Busta. The two met for the first time in the first round of last season’s Paris Masters, though, and a straight-sets victory for the Spaniard is a fairly solid benchmark of what may transpire this time around in the second round. Gaston’s efforts through the qualifiers to now make taking PCB as outright winner a sensible option here but it would be a surprise to not see the 12th seed find a way to the round of 16.
