World number four Alexander Zverev won his fourth ATP title of the season at the Vienna Open on Sunday, beating an inspired Frances Tiafoe in the final. The 24-year-old has claimed two Masters events in Madrid and Cincinnati as well as the Mexican Open but the crowning glory of what is proving to be his best season on tour is a Gold Medal from the Tokyo Olympic Games. World number 34 Dusan Lajovic surprised a few doubters on Monday with a solid performance against Mackenzie McDonald. The 31-year-old has a 17-26 record for what has been a poor season overall but there have been flashes of what he is capable of in wins over Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Canadian Open and Daniil Medvedev at the Rotterdam Open.
Alexander Zverev has to be one of the favourites for the ATP Finals title later this month after such incredible form all season, although especially in recent months. The 24-year-old has lost just twice since Wimbledon in July with a 17-2 record to show for an almost total domination of the hardcourt swing alongside US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. He has won all three previous meetings with Dusan Lajovic after this year’s three-set victory at the Australian Open, although their first two came in the form of five-set epics at Roland-Garros in 2018 and 2019. Zverev should be winning this one in straight sets but considering he is coming off a title win there should always be some room allowed for a lapse. Zverev to win outright is the sensible call.
