THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Gael Monfils fought back superbly from a set down to Miomir Kecmanovic in the late match on Tuesday in front of an adoring crowd. The French favourite has long-awaited the backing of a full stadium with his form directly affected by the pandemic and loss of fans upon tennis’ return to empty stadiums. 35-year-old Monfils was twice a finalist here in 2009 and 2010, losing to Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling respectively. It will be an all-French second round with 33-year-old Adrian Mannarino finding some his best form from the blue to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets on Monday. The current world number 59 has endured a torrid season with a win record of now 13-23 but there have been flashes of brilliance, not least his four-set defeat via an injury to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.
This should be a wonderful all-French affair played in the best of spirits between two French veterans. Adrian Mannarino will expect to receive warm affection but for showman extraordinaire Monfils to garner the vast majority of the raucous support and with both men playing well that could be the difference here. Over five previous meetings Monfils leads their head-to-head 3-2 and he has won the last two encounters, both in France, at Roland-Garros in 2019 and Montpellier last year. Take Monfils to win outright with three of their five matches seeing a set go both ways.
