THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Marcos Giron will set a new career-high ATP world ranking next Monday no matter the outcome of this match after two vastly impressive wins over in-form players in Frances Tiafoe and Diego Schwartzman. The American also enjoyed a great run to the round of 16 at the Paris Masters last season before losing out to Milos Raonic in straight sets. World number eight Casper Ruud conceded just four games to Alexander Bublik on Wednesday to reach the round of 16 as the eighth seed. The Norwegian is well in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals later this month in the first of two remaining places after Jannik Sinner’s defeat to Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday. 22-year-old Ruud has the joint most titles won this season with five, alongside Alexander Zverev, winning three in a row on his favoured clay back in July.

Casper Ruud has been in ruthless form all season long but his first ATP title on a hardcourt at the San Diego Open back in September altered the discourse around his future as he proved himself a force on all surfaces. The Norwegian still has plenty to prove on the biggest stages, Grand Slams and Masters events like this one in Paris, with all six of his ATP titles coming at 250 level but he is still young and likely now to debut at the ATP Finals later this month for a career-best achievement. Marcos Giron is all about hard graft and never-say-die tennis that fared well last season in Paris, where he beat Matteo Berrettini en route to the round of 16, and has done so again this year. His performances so far suggest there could be a set in this first meeting for both players but taking Ruud to win outright is the reasonable outcome here..
