31-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff enjoyed a return to form last week at the St. Petersburg Open with a straight-set victory over Denis Shapovalov taking him to the semi-finals before defeat to Taylor Fritz. The world number 50 also made the Munich Open final this season before losing out to Nikoloz Basilashvili but a run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros is his best achievement for 2021 with great wins over Andrey Rublev and Carlos Alcaraz. World number 53 Tommy Paul also enjoyed a sudden flash of form recently with a great run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells, via a career-best win over the aforementioned Rublev. The 24-year-old has lost to an eventual finalist in each of his last three tournaments, with one going on to win in the shape of Cam Norrie at Indian Wells.
This looks like a robust and likely lengthy first round match on Tuesday between two players happy to defend their baselines all day long. Jan-Lennard Struff’s recent performance in St. Petersburg and the indoor conditions in Paris probably make the German the slightest of favourites here but Paul is also at his best on slower courts. It would not be a surprise to see this match go to a decider but this feels too close to include in any accumulators. Take it to see three sets or for Struff to win at least one.
