World number 22 Gael Monfils has endured a topsy-turvy season, starting in dire form that improved in conjunction with the slow trickle of returning fans to courts. The 35-year-old is in the twilight of his career for sure but a return to form saw him reach the Moselle Open semi-finals in September before finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Sofia Open a week later. World number 69 Miomir Kecmanovic qualified well via straight-set wins over Egor Gerasimov and Dominik Koepfer this weekend but he is riding a three-match losing streak on tour into the first round of the Paris Masters. The 22-year-old reached a career-high 38th in the world back in March but he has endured a fairly torrid season far from the level that saw him win a first ATP title at the Kitzbuhel Open last season.
Paris’ favourite son Gael Monfils could be a dark horse for a deep run this week in conditions that suit him well as a two-time finalist here back in 2009 and 2010. Most importantly, fans have returned to create a partisan atmosphere for the 35-year-old and that should see him come through this first test against an out-of-sorts Miomir Kecmanovic, probably in two. Monfils made the quarter-finals here in 2019 on his way to some of his best form, in his own opinion, that saw him win two titles just before the suspension of the tennis season in 2020. Few players suffered more as a result of the pandemic and a decent draw could see him go on quite the charge on home soil.
