THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Marin Cilic won his second title of the 2021 season with an excellent campaign at the St. Petersburg Open. The 2014 US Open champion now owns a total of 20 ATP titles for an illustrious career and he will be a significant threat at the Paris Masters having reached the final of his last two tournaments in Russia. World number 45 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina enjoyed a great run on his Paris debut here last season to reach the round of 16 at then world number 115. The slower conditions should suit the Spaniard’s big game for clay, on which he made a career-best run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros back in June.
This is an intriguing match with Marin Cilic coming in hot off a second title of the season and the experienced Croat is unlikely to suffer too much from that dreaded post-title blip. Still, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was the winner of their only previous encounter in three sets last year at the Cologne Open in similar conditions. Cilic remains the favourite on form but this could be a long one and taking the world number 28 to earn at least a set as the likelier winner looks the most sensible option here.
