THE PREDICTION
In-form world number 26 Taylor Fritz can set a new career-high ATP ranking this week if he manages to maintain his level. The 24-year-old produced a stunning run to the Indian Wells semi-final before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili and he went one further on Sunday by finishing runner-up to Marin Cilic at the St. Petersburg Open. World number 27 Lorenzo Sonego has struggled to make a significant impact on a tournament since a strong run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in July. The 26-year-old won his second career ATP title earlier this year at the Sardegna Open and he enjoyed a great run to the Italian Open semi-finals before losing to Novak Djokovic in three sets.
This could not be more finely poised if it tried with world numbers 26 and 27 facing off in a top-heavy first round clash at the Paris Masters. Sonego beat Fritz en route to his Sardegna Open title this season but that levelled their head-to-head record at 2-2 with Fritz winning earlier in Qatar. The American is the man in better form but it is always tricky to come into a new tournament straight from losing a final. Take Fritz to win at least a set as the likelier player to edge through here.
