THE PREDICTION
World number 31 Karen Khachanov set a career-high of eight in the world soon after winning the Paris Masters back in 2018. Since then the Russian has been usurped by three of his compatriots in the rankings but he remains a superb all-court player who clearly suits the slower conditions indoors on these courts. After a fairly troubling 2020 season that hungover into this season, the 25-year-old emphatically reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in a return to form. Khachanov has lost to the eventual finalist in each of his last three tournaments and the eventual champion in his last two, to Aslan Karatsev in Moscow and Marin Cilic in St. Petersburg. World number 97 Mikael Ymer brings a three-match losing streak into the Paris Masters but the 23-year-old found some excellent form earlier this year. The Swede reached a first final before defeat to Ilya Ivashka at the Winston-Salem Open back in August as well as a first third round at a Grand Slam via a victory over Gael Monfils at Roland-Garros.
Khachanov and Ymer shared a brilliant five-set match in their only previous encounter that the Russian eventually took 8-6 in the deciding tiebreak at the 2020 Australian Open. 23-year-old Ymer has plenty of promise still but he has failed to push on from flurries of excellence this season and currently finds himself in some poor form. Khachanov has lost both of his opening matches in Paris since winning here in 2018 but he is in a better place this time around and should be backed to win outright here.
