World number 15 Diego Schwartzman is in some of his best hardcourt form right now to reach the quarter-finals at least in his last four tournaments. The 29-year-old has lost to an eventual finalist in each of his last three tournaments and two of the three champions, Cam Norrie at Indian Wells and Jannik Sinner in the final at the European Open. The Argentine added a fifth career ATP title earlier this season on home soil at the Buenos Aires Open but he is playing even better than his clay swing at present. World number 72 John Millman is far better than his current ranking but the 32-year-old recently lost his points haul from the 2020 Astana Open title, his only ATP title to date. Millman has made the quarter-finals of five of his last eight tournaments since the start of the hard court swing.
John Millman is a consistent performer in the early rounds of tournaments but he has been handed a poor opening draw here against in-form Diego Schwartzman. The Argentine has needed some serious stopping in recent weeks with wins over Casper Ruud at Indian Wells, Andy Murray at the European Open and Gael Monfils last week in Vienna all coming amongst a series of great performances. Their head-to-head record is finely poised at 1-1 but at this moment in time Schwartzman should be the man to reach the second round.
