THE PREDICTION
World number 41 Frances Tiafoe is enjoying some superb late-season form and he played an entertaining final on Sunday in a straight-sets defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Vienna Open. The level of tennis the American managed to produce in his semi-final comeback win over Jannik Sinner verged on the obscene in places and that plus a second defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas thus year make him look a dangerous man in Paris. Fellow American Marcos Giron is up to a career-high 57th in the ATP world rankings after a strong hardcourt swing this year. The 28-year-old twice beat Alex de Minaur at the Moselle Open and Sofia Open in September to reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals there, respectively, and he also made the last eight at the ATP 500 Halle Open back in June.
Marcos Giron has struggled to find the form that took him to the semi-finals of the Sofia Open this time last month but he enjoyed an excellent run to the round of 16 here last season before defeat to Milos Raonic. It remains to be seen how 23-year-old Tiafoe will respond to his defeat in the Vienna Open final, especially against a player he is supposed to beat in world number 57 Giron, but taking the in-form showman to win at least a set looks a suitably cautious move here.
