THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime won the Men’s Doubles title here last season alongside Hubert Hurkacz and that should not be underestimated as an extra few percent of belief this time around in the singles. Both the Canadian and Hurkacz are chasing an unlikely spot in the year-end ATP Finals this week but they would require essentially a win and for a capitulation by Jannik Sinner to do so. Auger-Aliassime added two more runner-up finishes to a now unwelcome tally of eight so far, losing the Murray River Open final to Dan Evans and the Stuttgart Open to Marin Cilic, but he reached a first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open back in September to show for his best season yet. 26-year-old Gianluca Mager is up to a career-high 66th in the ATP world rankings after recently reaching the quarter-finals of the Sofia Open.
This should be a fairly routine first round match for 21-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime against Gianluca Mager. The Italian qualified well with two three-set wins over Henri Laaksonen and Yoshihito Nishioka this weekend but Auger-Aliassime should take positives from a defeat to eventual Vienna Open champion Sascha Zverev last week through to a good campaign in Paris. The Canadian should take this in two.
