THE PREDICTION
32-year-old Benoit Paire has endured a tough season overall with a myriad of issues but after a decent spell of form over the summer he has a record of 2-6 since reaching the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. Paire set a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th back in 2016 and he has three titles to his name, all on clay, from the 2015 Bastad Open and the Marrakech Open and Lyon Open from 2019. World number 17 Pablo Carreno Busta is also currently struggling slightly with his form but his overall season has been one of his best. The 30-year-old won a Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer by way of defeating Novak Djokovic and he has added two more titles to his now total of six with wins in Andalucia and a first 500 event in Hamburg.
PCB recently made the final of the Moselle Open in Metz before defeat to Hubert Hurkacz but he has been found occasionally wanting for intensity at Indian Wells and the Vienna Open. This looks a rather unpredictable match-up as a result but one with plenty of history as Benoit Paire leads this head-to-head record 8-4. Carreno Busta should be able to lessen that gulf with the win here but if Paire is in the mood on home soil in Paris it would not be a surprise at all to see the alternative. Taking PCB to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners seems a suitably sensible pick.
