THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Andy Murray received a wildcard to the Paris Masters main draw as he continues to try and gather some momentum on tour. The Brit has been exceptional in individual performances but so has struggled to string good performances together, with a three-hour victory over Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells, a stunning four-hour victory over in-form Frances Tiafoe in Antwerp and a first top 10 victory since his return over Hubert Hurkacz testament to his resurgent level. Without consistently reaching the latter stages of tournaments he will struggle to make his way back up the ATP world rankings but the former world number one should be up for this last tournament of his season in a big way.
20-year-old Jenson Brooksby has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season and he set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 56th on Monday after reaching the European Open semi-finals. Brooksby has already reached a final on tour, finishing runner-up to Kevin Anderson at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, as well reaching the round of 16 of the US Open in emphatic fashion. His playstyle has already garnered plenty of admiration, including from his first Paris Masters opponent Murray who was effusive in his praise for the young American’s watchability.
This is a tough match to call for a number of reasons. Brooksby dropped sets to Peter Gojowczyk and Roberto Carballes Baena in the qualifying rounds here, a level below what is required to challenge Murray at this moment in time, but there is no doubt he will find an extra gear in facing the three-time Grand Slam champion for a first time. Furthermore, Murray has not lost in the first round of his last five tournaments and the last player to beat him from outside the top 50 was Frances Tiafoe back in August. The Brit should find the intensity required to come through here but taking both players to win a set and leaving the winner up to chance looks a reasonable outcome.
