THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Alexander Bublik has struggled to beat anyone at his level for some time, at least since his last victory over next opponent Dan Evans at the Canadian Open in August. The indoor conditions here in Paris should favour the hard-hitting Kazakh in a fourth career meeting with the British number two but it is even harder than usual to predict how Bublik will fare in his last tour tournament of another odd season. 31-year-old Dan Evans lost to the ever-improving Carlos Alcaraz at the Vienna Open last time out but he looked to be improving once again at Indian Wells after a covid-19 based blip in August. Two of the less predictable men on tour in the first round of a new tournament makes for a tough call but an almost certainly exciting match. Take Evans to win at least a set as the more reliable of players to put one hand on the second round.
