World number 56 Jasmine Paolini is quite an unassuming player on tour but she continues to oust players who underestimate her, with beating Dayana Yastremska in straight sets a great result for the Italian. Playing on home soil at the Courmayeur Open, the recent Slovenia Open champion has a great opportunity at reaching a second final in two months if she can beat Croatia’s Donna Vekic for a first time at tour level. 25-year-old Paolini did beat Vekic recently in the Indian Wells qualifiers but this semi-final holds much more value. Vekic, also 25, is yet to drop a set this week in Italy with three solid performances against Chinese players in Qinwen Zheng, Saisai Zheng and Xinyu Wang. Vekic is one of the tougher women to predict on tour, capable of beating anyone when at her sporadic best, but Paolini’s gutsy performances make taking the home favourite to earn at least a set seem the sensible option here.
