- World number 18 Stan Wawrinka was able to comfortably win his first round match in straight sets over Portugal’s Pedro Sousa, breaking his opponent four times.
- The 35-year-old owns an excellent 43-14 record at the Australian Open now with that first round win and will be aiming to emulate last season’s showing with a quarter-final place at least.
MARTON FUCSOVICS
- World number 55 Marton Fucsovics came back from a set down to beat Australia’s Marc Polmans in five gruelling sets in their first round match, including a fourth-set tiebreak.
- 28-year-old Fucsovics has made the second round here in Melbourne for four years in a row now and lost to Wawrinka’s fellow Swiss Roger Federer twice in the round of 16 in 2018 and 2020.
THE PREDICTION
Stan Wawrinka will have been glad of the easy entry into the second round as he attempts to save his energy for the latter stages of the tournament but Marton Fucsovics is likely to be an immovable object here. The Hungarian has beaten Wawrinka once before, on clay in 2018 but has since lost three times to the world number 18 at three Masters events in North American: the Rogers Cup, Cincinnati Open and Indian Wells. Two of those defeats required a deciding set and Fucsovics is likely to grind out a set or two for himself in this second round match. The world number 55 has every chance of winning this, and more so the longer it continues against 35-year-old Wawrinka, but both players to take a set in a victory for the Swiss is the likeliest outcome here. In four sets, if you are feeling brave.
