- World number 70 Dominik Koepfer was effective against Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien to win their first round match in straight sets, winning five games in a row at one stage.
- That first round win took the German into a positive 6-5 record at Grand Slams with a pretty high personal benchmark to reach here after he made the round of 16 at the 2019 US Open.
THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Dominik Koepfer was able to turn poor form from last week’s warm-up tournament into a comprehensive straight sets victory on Monday and he will be a combative, tireless opponent for Dominic Thiem. The world number three, however, is on his way back to his best form after a comfortable first match back at the Grand Slam he came so close to winning last season. Now a Grand Slam champion after his famous US Open win, Thiem will probably get better and better with each passing round in Melbourne. Koepfer played well enough against Dellien to deserve a set here but is more likely that Thiem takes this in assured straight sets.
