Maxime Cressy came through the qualifiers back in January to make the first round of a Grand Slam for just the second time after he reached the second round of the US Open last season. Cressy lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas that day but managed to take the Greek to a first-set tiebreak which is mightily impressive for a player currently ranked at world number 173. 28-year-old Taro Daniel sneaked through the qualifiers himself despite losing one of the three last month and he struggled at Melbourne Park in the warm-up tournaments. The Japanese world number 117 is the higher-ranked player but if Cressy can emulate his US Open form then this match should fall the American’s way, particularly as Daniel seems to be in poor form.
