JEREMY CHARDY
- 33-year-old Jeremy Chardy reached the semi-finals of one of six tournaments taking place at Melbourne Park as warm-up to the Australian Open, losing to Dan Evans in straight sets.
- World number 66 Chardy has reached the semi-finals of his first two tournaments in 2021, losing to Alexander Bublik at the Antalya Open last month.
THE PREDICTION
At the time of writing, Jeremy Chardy has yet to play a doubles final at Melbourne Park with Fabrice Martin in the Murray River Open and the French pair have an excellent chance at victory there. The same cannot be said for Chardy’s 14th meeting with Novak Djokovic here as the 33-year-old has never beaten the Serb in all those attempts spanning a decade from 2009 to 2019. Their previous meeting came at the Madrid Masters two years ago, where the world number one made it 13 straight-sets victories out of 13 against Chardy. It seems futile, then, to suggest anything else here. Chardy and Fabrice Martin may well make waves in the doubles at the Australian Open but a straight-sets first round victory for reigning champion Novak Djokovic is pretty likely here.
