THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Marton Fucsovics reached the second round of the Murray River Open as the 16th seed but lost in three sets to Egor Gerasimov. The Hungarian was excellent at last year’s Australian Open where he eventually lost in the round of 16 to Roger Federer, in fact for the second time after the Swiss also beat him at that stage in 2018. Marc Polmans lost his first match of the year this week in one of five warm-up tournaments and has qualified for the Australian open for the third year running. The world number 125 beat Mikhail Kukushkin in a five-set slog last year here to reach his best-ever Grand Slam place but that looks unlikely against the “Iron Man of tennis” Fucsovics. Confidence seems to be the only thing keeping the Hungarian away from the top 50 in the past few years and he knows how to turn it on in Melbourne. A straight-sets victory for Fucsovics seems the most reasonable outcome.
