THE PREDICTION
World number 194 Mackenzie McDonald started off 2021 with a poor showing at the Delray Beach Open but he beat Richard Gasquet at the Murray River Open last week before losing to an in-form Alex Bolt. The American will face Marco Cecchinato for the first time here with some decent Grand Slam experience behind him having reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2018. Cecchinato, though, has real pedigree after a shock run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in that same year. The Italian reached a career-high world number 16 in 2019 and he should be able to overcome a spirited McDonald in four or five sets. McDonald lost in five at this stage last season to Dan Evans with his mentality sometimes questionable at the crucial moments. Both players to claim a set in a first round win for Cecchinato seems a reasonable outcome.
