THE LOWDOWN

GUIDO PELLA

  • 30-year-old Guido Pella was unable to help Team Argentina escape their group at the ATP Cup after losing to Andrey Rublev, although he overcame Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the dead rubber match.
  • World number 44 Pella should benefit well from his two ATP Cup matches here as he aims to at least emulate his best Australian Open showing of a third round exit to Fabio Fognini last season.

BORNA CORIC

  • World number 25 Borna Coric beat Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 at the Murray River Open last Friday but lost his second match of the day against the eventual winner Dan Evans.
  • · 24-year-old Coric will have been one of a few players disappointed to see the end of the 2020 season as the Croatian found a rich vein of form in the last month of play that saw him finish runner-up at the St. Petersburg Open for a second year running.

THE PREDICTION

This looks like one of the higher-quality first round matches at the Australian Open between Guido Pella and Borna Coric, both of whom should be aiming to make at least the third round here. 30-year-old Pella won their only previous meeting back in 2017 but on the face of it Coric is probably the player in better form for this match-up. The Croat struggled in his second of two games against Dan Evans last week but failing a crisis in confidence this should be Coric’s win with both players able to take a set.
