World number 96 Gianluca Mager will hope to win his first Grand Slam match at the third attempt here having lost in the first round of the US Open and Roland-Garros last Autumn. The Italian lost in three sets to Jordan Thompson at the Great Ocean Road Open this week but fared better at the Delray Beach Open last month, where he reached the quarter-finals. Aslan Karatsev has qualified for his first ever Grand Slam here at the age of 27 after some decent results last season saw his form rise to competitive at this level, most notably Tennys Sandgren at the St. Petersburg Open. There looks to be opportunity for both players here and a result would be a difficult one to side with.
