THE PREDICTION

World number 71 Stefano Travaglia lost in the final of the Great Ocean Road Open to fellow Italian Jannik Sinner on Saturday but he can be immensely proud of his season so far. Travaglia beat seeds Sam Querrey, Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Bublik on his way to the final and will be in excellent condition ahead of the first round here to face Frances Tiafoe. World number 66 Tiafoe reached the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach Open last month but was not as successful this week in Melbourne. Both players have more match practice in their legs than most at the Australian Open and this should be a really interesting, competitive battle on court. They have never played each other before and right now this result looks to be on a knife-edge. At their very best this should be Tiafoe’s day but the Italian’s recent form cannot be underestimated. Both players to win a set seems almost a given here and it could be worth stopping there. At a push, Travaglia looks a threat and narrowly edges this match-up.
