- World number nine Diego Schwartzman lost again to Daniil Medvedev in the first match of his ATP Cup campaign but went on to help Team Argentina beat Japan with a three-set victory over Kei Nishikori.
- The 28-year-old will be a real threat at the Australian Open if he can continue in the same vein as 2020, where he reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros as well as the round of 16 here last January.
THE PREDICTION
Elias Ymer has been impressive in the qualifying rounds but the draw has not been kind to the 24-year-old Swede with Diego Schwartzman aiming to capitalise on the best form of his life. The Argentine broke into the top 10 last season after a semi-final loss to eventual champion Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros and the diminutive player’s dogged determination, especially on the big stage, is second to none. There are some top players on tour that Schwartzman must hope to avoid, most notably Daniil Medvedev to whom he has lost three times in as many months, but otherwise the world number nine should be reaching the round of 16 here before he is truly tested. He grabbed some good match practice at the ATP Cup that should see him beat Elias Ymer in straight sets here.
